Divisions of the Department

The Texas Highway Patrol protects Texas from public safety threats by conducting high-visibility patrol; deterring, detecting and interdicting public safety threats on roadways; responding to critical events on Texas roadways; providing statewide emergency response and rescue; and utilizing advancements in technology to conduct commercial vehicle enforcement operations. The Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol is the main Career Development path to access all other divisions within the department, upon applying for this position and you are accepted and receive training to be a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper once you are at a certain point within your career in the department you may be eligible to apply for Divisions such as Texas Rangers, Special Response Team, High Speed Unit, Training Operations, Office of Inspector General.

The Texas Rangers was founded in 1823 and was the first Statewide Police within Texas and they are the Premier investigative body of the Department of Public Safety. From solving cold cases and public corruption to leading high-stakes border security missions, the Rangers handle the most complex crimes in the Lone Star State. The Texas Department of Public Safety Special Response Team (SRT) is an elite tactical unit placed within each region of Texas the Special Response Team is comprised of Texas Highway Patrol Officers along with Texas Rangers, trained to handle high-risk and critical incidents across the state. These situations include hostage rescues, armed barricades, counterterrorism operations, and the apprehension of dangerous fugitives. SRT members undergo rigorous physical and tactical training, equipping them with advanced skills in marksmanship, breaching, negotiation, and crisis response. Working closely with other law enforcement agencies, the SRT ensures the safety of Texans by responding swiftly and effectively to threats that exceed the capabilities of standard patrol officers. Their professionalism, discipline, and precision make them one of the most respected tactical teams in the nation.

The Texas Department of Public Safety’s Highway Patrol High Speed Unit is a specialized team tasked with combating dangerous criminal activity on Texas roadways. This unit focuses on high-speed pursuits and organized crime, addressing threats that compromise public safety. Officers receive advanced training and operate specially equipped vehicles to safely intercept and apprehend offenders. The High-Speed Unit also works closely with local, state, and federal partners to enhance public safety across Texas. The Texas Department of Public Safety’s Office of Inspector General Division is responsible for ensuring accountability, integrity, and professionalism within the department. It oversees internal investigations into employee conduct, reviews use-of-force incidents, and ensures compliance with state laws, policies, and departmental standards. The division provides guidance and training on ethical practices while promoting a culture of transparency and public trust. It also manages complaint intake and resolution, working to address concerns raised by both the public and department personnel. Through its work, the Office of Inspector General upholds the credibility and effectiveness of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The mission of the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Training Operations Division (TOD) is to prepare law enforcement leaders and peace officers to meet 21st century demands and challenges. To this end, TOD develops a wide variety of world-class training and education programs and delivers them to public safety professionals within the department and throughout the state.

Texas Game Wardens are law enforcement officers who protect wildlife and enforce hunting, fishing, and boating laws under the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Their history began in the late 1800s when overhunting caused animal populations to decline, leading Texas to create official Game Wardens in 1907 to enforce new conservation laws. Over time, their role expanded, especially after the formation of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1963, which unified conservation efforts across the state. Today, Game Wardens patrol land and water, conduct search and rescue missions, respond to natural disasters, and enforce all Texas laws as fully commissioned peace officers. Their work is essential in protecting natural resources, maintaining wildlife populations, and preserving outdoor traditions in Texas.
